A newly minted graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1890, Dr. Thomas Parks heads to the big timber country of Puget Sound to practice trauma medicine. Besides doing his best to treat patients while he himself hobbles about with one functioning eye, one hand, and one leg, Dr. Thomas must decide whether to expose the old family friend. Things become even more complicated when his host's daughter, Alvi, falls in love with Thomas, for exposing the scam that would destroy her father.

He is a master at his craft and again proves it well. This is a change from the New Mexico Undersheriff Bill Gastner and Chief Deputy Guzman. This novel is about a young physican who moves west to work with well respected Dr. John Haines who also has a lovely daughter. But alas, all is not as it seems in the Pacific North West. Dr. Haines associates with several snake oil salesmen and his clinic falls far short of pictures and hype. Dr Parks is determined to practice medicine to the best of his ability, with integrity, and honesty. All involved are not as honest as he and there is much double dealing, death and deception going on in the background. The medical details seen highly accurate and this is an engrossing mystery. Very Educational and interesting! However, his second book a follow-up dwelled a bit too long on the subject.
good book
Excellent read. The only problem is that I have now read ALL of Steven Havill's books. They have been a delightful feast of characters and storyline. More please!!!
I liked the book and found the setting interesting, Western Washington in the early 1900s. There was a strong sense of forboding in the early part of the book, making you wonder who the good guys really were.
I really love the author's work. I only give it 4 stars because the subject is difficult. I'm a Physician Assistant, so I had no problem with it. But others might find it so.
Not as tightly written as the Posadas County books. The plot tends to drag in the middle. Still, an enjoyable read.
Having read all of Havill's Posada County, New Mexico series, I stumbled on Race for the Dying followed by Comes A Time For Burning., Both are great historical type novels--excellent reads. Have referred to friends who concur. If you need some good reads, try Steven F. Havill. A great developer of characters and all around satisfying reading in both genres.
